In order to stir magnetic beads you can not use any method that employs
magnetism, magnetic drives or magnetic clutches because the beads will be
attracted to them and taken out of solution. As magnetic beads have
become more popular in a variety of assays, a non-magnetic method to keep
them uniformly suspended is required. It is also important to use
a method and reservoir that does not have "fall out zones" places where the
bead fall out of solution. The "fall out zone" problem is a difficult
one for those stirrers that use a propeller blade approach as the corners of
those reservoirs are "fall out dead zones". Similar problems are
found in the corners of mixers that use ultrasound to mix beads.
The VP 767-2 and VP 758-3 with its' sealed
drive shaft eliminates the need for magnetic clutches or drive magnets and
the design of the Bubble Paddle Reservoir takes care of the "fall out zone".
Problem solved! The pipet depressions on the bottom of the reservoir
also reduces the waste of these precious reagents.
The reservoirs
come standard in;
economical Delrin (VP 758-3)
in autoclaveable Polypropylene
(VP 758-3P) and in autoclaveable PTFE (VP 758-3PTFE)
Over all Reservoir Specifications:
109 mm long, 51 mm wide, 42 mm
tall
Reservoir depth = 32 mm**
Reservoir volume = 50 ml
Dead volume = 3 ml
Over all Reservoir and Motor
Specifications:
284 mm long, 78 mm wide and 72
mm tall.
The sealed drive shaft is subject
to wear. The degree of wear is determined by the material being
stirred and the length of the stirring time. The seal should not
be operated dry. Although you will get hundreds of hours of
operation before the seal fails we have provided a simple replacement sealed
drive shaft (VP 758-3S). This unit is simple enough that
it can be replaced in the field so there is no down time. The photo
above illustrates the double O-rings used to attach the unit to the
reservoir. The photo to the right illustrates the custom Bal Seal
used to seal the drive shaft. The unit also contains 2 bearings to
keep the shaft true and reduce wear on the Bal Seal.

The VP 758-3MAX & VP 767-2-MAX Magnetic
Bead Stirrer was made for a customer who needed to keep 400
ml of magnetic beads in solution while pipetting them into
96 well assay plates on a Tecan work station. Our
solution was to make a 450 ml reservoir with 13 bubble
paddle blade.

The VP 758-5PP & VP 767-3 is another Magnetic Bead Stirring system for magnetic bead suspensions as high as 450 ml but with a shorter and wider Reservoir then the VP 7583MAX. The VP 758-5PP Reservoir is made of polypropylene and designed for 8 or 12 pipette tips. It has a ducted bottom and includes an aluminum paddle with 13 bubbles and a double sealed drive shaft. |

The VP 767M and VP 758M are
miniature versions of the VP 767-2 and the VP 758-3. They were
designed to be compatible with the Innovadyne Nanodrop for magnetic bead dispensing. The VP 758M
uses a similar sealed drive shaft as the VP 758-3 and the bubble paddle and
pipet depressions on the bottom of the reservoir are identical to the
VP 756CM-P thus combining the best of both worlds to produce uniform
suspensions of magnetic beads with very low dead volumes.
Reservoirs come standard in autoclaveable Polypropylene
(VP 758M) with an inlet and outlet nipple.

The latest in our line magnetic bead
stirrers is the VP 759 Bubble Paddle Reservoir and the VP 769
Motor/gear drive. This system made for 96 robot pipetting systems is
shown in the photo to the right on the deck of a PerkinElmer
EP3. This system is designed to fit on one of the
corner positions. The least impact on deck positions
(one deck position) required is when the system is located
on either the upper right hand corner or the lower left hand
corner. Two deck positions are required when it is
placed in the lower right as illustrated in the photo or in
the upper left. Three deck positions are required if
the installation is on an edge position.
The photo to the right illustrates the
motor and gear system of the VP 769 in its rotated up position. We have
designed the system so alignment pins (not shown) on the bottom of the base
plate register with registration holes used on the EP3 to locate microplate
tiles. The base plate has two alignment pins which
register and locate the VP 759 Bubble Paddle Reservoir so the pipetting
points are the same as a 96 well microplate. The adjustment screw in
the lower right is for setting the degree of tooth engagement on the gears.
