Home Brewer Testimonial of VP 706B-3 Mini Stirrus Horizontal/Vortex Magnetic Stirrer
As
a home brewer gone wild, I wanted a stir plate to create yeast starters
from slants or small vials of yeast. The stir plate must be able
to turn viscous material for long periods of time. I’ve tried
many stir plates in the past, both homemade and those bought from
scientific supply companies, some costing in excess of $350, but they
never seemed to stand the test of time. One scientific company
was gracious enough to replace their stir plate 3 times but they kept
burning out. There is nothing more frustrating than being in the
middle of a grow cycle only to have to run out and buy another stir
plate to finish the job.
It’s my belief that most stir plates are designed to run light weight
solutions for fairly short amounts of time. So growing yeast
cultures, which continue to thicken as they grow over several days, was
too large a task to ask. I was about to give up when I met Dr
Patrick Cleveland of V&P Scientific. I told him what I was
trying to do and of the large number of stir plates that I had burned
out in just 18 months. He said he had the solution for me and
recommended the VP 706B-3. When he first told me the price, I
gasped. But that night I calculated what I had invested in
stir plates already and to my amazement I had spent that and
more. So I decided to give it a try.
First let me offer a word of caution when using this stir plate.
The magnetic coupling is so strong between the stir bar and the stir
plate itself that you need to drop the stir bar into the mixing
container before placing it on the stir plate. If you simply drop
it in while on the stir plate, it will couple so strong and quick that
it can and did crack my flask.
As all home brewers know, a yeast culture grows and becomes more and
more viscous so you usually need to turn up the power to keep the stir
plate spinning at the same RPM. However, with the strength of the
VP 706B-3’s motor, I never saw any visible signs of slowing. I’m
sure some occurred, but it was so minimal that I couldn’t notice it by
just looking at it.
I’ve run the VP 706B-3 for up to a week straight without a single
issue. I’m on my 16th starter now and I’ve had absolutely zero
issues with this bad boy. Every time I check on it, it makes me
smile as it continues to spin. It’s a great feeling to know I’ve
found a product I can rely on time after time.
One last note: Dr Cleveland is so customer satisfaction-driven
that he has personally called me three times to make sure his product
was living up to what he promised. I can say with 100% honesty
that this stir plate is simply amazing and worth every penny and
V&P Scientific has been a pleasure to deal with.
