A New Idea In Magnetic Stirrers--

Sandwich Protected NdFeB Cores For Vigorous Stirring In Any Shape

V&P Scientific is proud to introduce our new VP 772F and VP 772T series of PTFE encased Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) Magnetic Stirring elements.   Neodymium is the strongest of the permanent magnetic materials but you haven't seen it offered as a magnetic stirrer as the temperature required by the PTFE encapsulating  process destroys the magnetic characteristics of Neodymium (NdFeB).  Without a way to protect the Neodymium from the solution to be stirred and without a barrier to prevent leaching of the NdFeB into the solution it was not possible to use Neodymium as a stir device.

V&P has solved that problem with our new "Sandwich" technique for encasing the neodymium in protective layers of PTFE and Parylene (patent pending).    This ability allows us to produce very powerful Neodymium (48 MGO) stir bars and other shapes that are now capable of greater coupling to the drive magnet and thereby achieving higher stirring speeds for a  more rapid mixing action and the stirring of extremely viscous solutions.  This is a proprietary process and V&P is the only source of PTFE protected neodymium stir elements.

Another advantage of this process is that it is very easy to make custom shapes to fit specific applications.  You don't have to search for a stirrer that will fit your vessel - just tell us the shape and length you need and we will make it for you in less than 2 weeks.

Still yet another advantage of this system is that you can use either NdFeB or the more temperature resistant SmCo magnetic dscs.  So in applications where you want to stir and heat the reaction mixture between 150C and 300C, you should select the SmCo drive magnets.  NdFeB highest operating temperature is 150C and SmCo is 300C.

VP 772F Series

The VP 772F series is a new concept in magnetic stirrers.  The VP 772F  features pairs of parylene encapsulated NdFeB or SmCo magnetic discs with a 1.58 mm thick pocketed sheet of PTFE sandwiched in between (Patent Pending).  An N in the part number indicates that the discs are NdFeB and an S indicates SmCo.

The PTFE sheet can be made to any shape to accommodate the internal dimensions of any vessel as illustrated in the photo to the right.  Multiple pockets to accommodate multiple magnetic discs are also possible as indicated in the photo.  All these stirrers were designed to be small enough (width) to fit through the neck of the bottle and long enough to cover the internal diameter of the bottle for maximum surface contact.  When placed on a VP 708 Vortex Lateral Tumble Stirrer the flat shape of the VP 772F stands up on edge and becomes a "paddle" capable of moving large volumes of liquid with ease.  These stir elements can also be used with conventional horizontal magnetic stirrers.

VP 772FN-17-64

The VP 772FN-17-64 was designed to be used by conventional magnetic stirrers as a low profile stirrer that lays flat on the bottom of the vessel such as the magnetic stirrers on the Beckman FX robot so that the maximum amount of fluid can be recovered from the reservoir.

VP 772FN and VP 772FS PTFE Disc Series

The PTFE disc series Sandwich style stir elements protect the parylene coated NdFeB and SmCo discs inside a ring of PTFE.  The PTFE discs are available in the following diameters: 5 mm, 8 mm, 13 mm and 24 mm.  The 5, 8 and 13 mm diameter discs are 1.6 mm thick, the 24 mm diameter disc is 4.8 mm thick (VP 772FN-5-5, VP 772FN-8-8, VP 772FN-13-13 and VP 772FN-24-24).

Follow this link for detailed dimensions and sizes.

The disc series Sandwich style stir elements can be used with our Horizontal Tumble Stirrers, Vortex lateral Tumble Stirrers and conventional magnetic stir plates.

The advantage of Neodymium Iron Boron discs is that they are significantly stronger and less expensive than the Samarium Cobalt discs.

The same PTFE disc series can be used to protect parylene coated SmCo discs
(VP 772FS-5-5, VP 772FS-8-8, VP 772FS-13-13 and VP 772FS-24-24).  The only difference between these two series besides the type of magnetic disc is the number of SmCo discs in the VP 772FS-24-24 which is 4 (two on each side as the VP 782S-21 are half the thickness of the VP 782N-21).

Follow this link for detailed dimensions and sizes.

The advantage of the Samarium Cobalt discs is they can be used in high temperature applications, up to 300o C, however it should be noted that parylene will protect only to 200o C.   Neodymium Iron Boron discs can only be used at temperatures less than 150oC.

VP 772FN and VP 772FS Tuning Fork and Rectangular Series

Our miniature "Sandwich" style stir elements in the VP 772FN-5, VP 772FN-6, VP 772FS-5 and VP 772FS6 series were designed to work with glass vials in 96 well reaction blocks or 96 deep well microplates.  These stir elements are powered by either 48 MGO NdFeB magnetic discs (VP 782N-3) or VP 782S-3 and are capable of stirring solutions as viscous as honey.  See the  movie on this page.

The "Tuning Fork" (TF) design has proven to be very efficient in mixing two liquids with dissimilar specific gravities.  The rectangular blade design produces very strong vortexes.  The "V" shape is very useful in stirring PCR plates where the "V" shape of the stirrer matches the conical shape of the PCR well.

Another advantage of the Tuning Fork design is that pipet tips can be placed into the tip of the Tuning Fork and samples removed while the stirrer is still spinning.  The photo to the right illustrates this ability with a pipet tip inserted.

The VP 772FN-6-16TF is a second generation design change with a wider stirrer to stabilize the central position of the Tuning Fork within the well and the lowering of the magnetic discs to reduce the dead volume.

It works most efficiently with our VP 708A Vortex Stirrers or conventional stir plates.

The VP 772F_-6-16TFP is a third generation design change incorporating a pivot point on the bottom and "wing tips" on the top of the tuning forks (arrows).  This design reduces the friction between the stir element and the vessel by reducing the area of contact.  It also reduces grinding and shear forces if the solution contains a particulate matter.  It is available with NdFeB drive magnets (VP 772FN-6-16TFP) or with SmCo drive magnets (VP 772FS-6-16TFP).

These stirrers are designed to fit into the glass tubes in 96 well blocks as well as deep well microplates.

Umbrella Stirrers - VP 772FNU-24

The newest of our innovations in stirring in microplates are the Umbrella Stirrers
VP 772FNU-24
.  The Umbrella Stirrers are constructed out of PTFE with our unique sandwich pockets for the magnets positioned above the support plate to keep the stirrer from touching the bottom of the microplate.   These Umbrella Stirrers allow for mixing in 24 well microplates without touching the bottom or sides of the wells.  Thus cells or other objects on the bottom of the wells will not be damaged or disturbed when new compounds or reagents are added to the wells and mixed.  These stirrers are capable of mixing solutions as viscous as 90% honey.  See video

This system can also be used to mix magnetic beads as the stirrer's magnet is not in contact with the liquid.

These stirrers are designed to only work with our VP 708 series Vortex Stirrers.

VP 772T-6 Series

The 48 MGO NdFeB magnetic cores in the VP 772T series stir bars provide vastly improved magnetic coupling to the drive magnet on a conventional horizontal stirrer or one of our V&P Stirrers (VP 710 series and VP 708 series).  The greater magnetic coupling means faster stirring speeds and the ability to stir material previously considered too thick to stir (honey, tooth paste and even bread dough).  Because our V&P Stirrers also use very large 48 MGO NdFeB drive magnets, when used with the VP 772T series stir bars you can stir the most difficult solutions in any size or shape of vessel.

The VP 772T-6 series features parylene encapsulated NdFeB magnetic cores sandwiched in PTFE tubing.  The tubing outside diameter is 6.35 mm and the length of the stir bars varies from 11 to 87 mm as illustrated in the photo to the right.

Conventional PTFE Encapsulated Stir Elements (Alnico and Samarium Cobalt)

These stir bars can be used for both Tumble Stirring and Vortex Tumble Stirring applications as well as conventional horizontal spinning.    Whether you call them Magnetic Spinning Bars, Stirring Magnets or Magnetic Stir Bars we have one of the largest collections at the best prices.

We also offer  Alnico V and Samarium Cobalt magnets conventionally encapsulated in PTFE.  These stir bars and discs are shown in the photo to the right. In addition to the permanent magnet stirrers we also offer magnetic stainless steel  Stir elements (discs, dowels and bars) and Stir StiXs.  The stainless steel stir elements are more cost effective and many of our customers treat them as disposables.  They are available uncoated, coated with cost effective parylene and encapsulated with PTFE.

  • Isostatic encapsulation with PTFE to eliminate cracks and porosity

  • FDA approved PTFE

  • Alnico V and Samarium Cobalt magnet cores

  • Polished finish to reduce pick-up and cross contamination

  • Sterilize using thermal or chemical means

  • High performance stirring bars at "disposable" prices

  • Broad range of chemical resistance

Our stir bars range in diameter from 1.5 mm to 8 mm and from 2 mm to 87 mm in length.  The shapes also are diverse, from round, to rectangular, crosses and octahedral.  The number after the hyphen of the VP part number is the length of the stir bar in mm.

VP 778 Series

The square design of the VP 778 series stir bars makes them slightly more efficient at  moving liquid and thereby stirring a solution either in the tumble or spin mode.  The square dimension of these stir bars is from 4x4 mm to 7.5x7.5 mm.

Follow this link for detailed dimensions and sizes.

Most of the above magnetic stir bars feature ALNICO V magnetic cores which are one of the most powerful permanent magnet alloys available. Offered in many shapes from round, octagonal, and square, these PTFE encapsulated magnetic stir bars resist harsh chemicals and are resistant to scratching and high temperatures.

There are several measures that should be used to increase the life span of magnetic stir bars. First, Stir Bars should be stored in pairs to maintain magnetic strength. Stir bars should not be stored in a random mass or dropped on a hard surface especially steel.

  Samarium Cobalt Magnetic Stir Bars

VP 777 Series

Stirring very viscous solutions often requires the extra magnetic energy of a Rare Earth (Samarium Cobalt or Neodymium Boron) magnet.  Our Alligator Tumble Stirrers can stir even the most viscous solutions when using these VP 777 series Stir Bars and the VP 779 series Stir Discs.  The VP 777 series stir bars have a diameter of 6 to 8 mm and the VP 775-35  Samarium Cobalt stir bars have a diameter of 3 mm.  More Rare Earth Stir bars and Discs will be added to this series in the future.

**NEW** Samarium Cobalt Magnetic Stir Discs

VP 779 Series

The disc design of the VP 779 series makes them significantly more efficient at  moving liquid and thereby mixing solution in the tumble mode.  Selecting a disc that is slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the vessel to be stirred results in the most efficient stirring.  To stir viscous material requires greater energy so we constructed these discs from Samarium Cobalt and encapsulated them with PTFE to make them inert.

The VP 779-13 (13 mm diameter x 1.8 mm thick) was designed to fit into many vials.  If your application requires a different diameter let us know.

  Dispensers For Magnetic Stir Bars

VP 775-A autoclaveable Drop Dispensers are used to place  sterile PTFE encapsulated magnetic stir bars into wells or vials after the liquid is added.  When used in conjunction with the VP 771 magnet the Stir Bars stand on end and fall into the loading holes.  Simple as 1, 2, 3.  This VP 775-A series  48 place dispenser can be sterilized by autoclaving or by heating in a hot air oven.

The magnet Stir Bar Dispenser solves one of the most difficult problems that has plagued scientists who were trying to do high through put stirring or fermenting of viscous solutions ... getting the clump of magnets into multiple vials easily.

As demand warrants we will make more of these dispensers to accommodate our customers' needs and applications.

The VP 775-A dispenser contains  48 ordered holes in a top loading plenum that is 6 mm deep.  By adding additional plenums that are 2 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm thick, four different lengths (6, 8, 10 and 12 mm) of the VP775 series Stir Bars can be accommodated (VP 775-6, VP 775-8, VP 775-10 and VP 775-12). The holes in the plenums are just large enough to accommodate just one Stir Bar.  This system is similar to those we have made for loading Stir StiXs into deep well microplates or vials.  Details of how they work is on this link.

  **NEW**
Drop Tumble Stirrer Dispenser For Samarium Cobalt Magnetic Discs

VP 779-5A

The Newest Drop Dispenser (VP 779-5A) solves the problem of loading magnetized discs into microplates.  We have been working a long time and have tested many prototypes to solve the interaction of the magnets sticking together and not loading into the plenums.   The VP 779-5A is an engineering feat that makes loading the very strong VP 772FS-5-5 Samarium Cobalt discs easy to do.  First stacks of 12 VP 772FS-5-5 are loaded into 8 chambers in the loading jig.  Spring loaded plungers are used to force  the discs into the plenum as the jig slides across.

The dispenser also has a retaining lid to keep the magnetic discs in place until they are dropped  into the microplate.  When all 8 chambers are loaded the spring loaded plungers place into the loading jig to push the discs into the plenum as the operator pushes the loading jig across the plenum as shown at the right.

As the loading jig advances across the plenum, discs are dropped into each hole, an attached retaining lid prevents the magnets from moving about.  This operation is done on top of a VP 770B magnetic block to facilitate the loading process and to pull the magnetic discs into the microplate when the loading plenum is pushed to the open position as demonstrated in the photo to the right.

Once dispensed, the magnetic discs are captured in the microplate with a plate lid and removed from the magnet.

When removed from the VP 770B the magnetic discs are attracted to discs in neighboring wells.  When place on a V&P Tumble Stirrer they are attracted to the Stirrer's magnetic cylinder and begin to tumble independently.
